Meet Sydney
Sydney is the kitten who makes you take ten pictures because one picture simply cannot explain what is going on here.
Turn her one direction and she’s warm copper and red.
Turn her the other direction and suddenly there are dark tabby markings, smoky brown, cream, and an entirely different-looking face.
Then she stands up and you realize her legs apparently weren’t interested in coordinating with each other either.
Sydney has a lot going on.
And somehow, every bit of it works.
Her face may be the best example. One side is dramatically darker, with deep tabby markings sweeping around her eye and cheek. The other side warms up with orange and copper. A lighter streak travels down the center toward that wonderful little brick-colored nose.
Even her nose couldn’t settle for ordinary.
Her muzzle is lighter and softer, and then there are those enormous round eyes. Right now they’re changing out of their baby color and developing a gray-green appearance with warmer tones beginning to show. Where they’ll finally land is another Sydney detail we’ll have to wait for.
Then there are the ears.
They’re enormous.
Not “those are cute little kitten ears” enormous.
More like “Sydney, are you receiving stations from neighboring counties?” enormous.
They’re tall, beautifully furnished, and finished with dark little tips that make them look even longer.
Her front legs are another study in Sydney’s refusal to match. One carries considerably more dark tabby coloring while the other is much warmer and more orange. Even the toes look like they belong to different outfits.
Then she turns around and reveals that she does have some white on her back feet.
Apparently Sydney owns white socks.
She just doesn’t wear them on the front.
There’s also lighter white coloring through her chest and underside, tucked among all that warm copper and darker patterning.
Across her body, rich reds and coppers blend into brown and nearly black areas. Her coat changes depending on the angle, and her long fluffy tail carries still more variation before finishing darker toward the end.
Sydney isn’t a kitten with one standout feature.
She has about twelve.
The half-and-half face.
The brick-colored nose.
Those enormous ears.
The mismatched front legs.
The surprise white back feet.
The changing eyes.
The tail.
And a coat that seems to have something different happening everywhere you look.
Sydney apparently received the entire box of crayons and saw absolutely no reason to give any of them back.
One picture was never going to be enough.
Her Color & Markings
Tortoiseshell Tabby (Torbie)
Sydney’s professional color and pattern classification is tortoiseshell tabby, commonly called torbie.
Her coat combines black-based and red-based coloring with visible tabby patterning. Her red-based coloring ranges from warm orange to rich copper, intermingled with darker brown-to-black patterned areas.
Sydney does have some white, including white on her back feet and lighter white areas through her chest/underside. However, she does not have white on her front feet, so we are not classifying or advertising her as “Torbie with White.”
Her nose leather is a distinctive brick color with darker pigmentation.
Sydney’s eyes are currently developing and appear gray-green in these photographs, with warmer tones beginning to emerge. Her permanent adult eye color has not yet been determined.
Temperament Starts at Home
At Ribbons and Bows Maine Coons, we believe temperament is one of the most important parts of raising a Maine Coon well.
Sydney is being raised underfoot in our home in Warsaw, Missouri, and around our daily business, where she is part of everyday life.
She is handled regularly, plays around us, follows our routines, and learns that people, household activity, affection, play, and gentle boundaries are all normal parts of her world.
That close, hands-on start helps prepare her to transition confidently into her new family.
