Meet Hazel

Every litter has kittens you adore.

And then there’s the one you keep looking at just a little longer.

For me, that’s Hazel.

If I were choosing one from this litter for myself, Hazel would be my pick.

Maybe it’s because she has so many little details competing to be my favorite.

Start with that face.

A beautiful sweep of warm copper-orange runs down her forehead and across one side of her face, while the other side turns dramatically darker. Around one eye she is warm and golden; around the other, she looks like she’s wearing a tiny dark mask.

Then, right in the middle of all that color, is the sweetest little pink nose.

Underneath is that tiny white chin—just enough white to make you notice it. No white socks or white feet. Apparently Hazel decided one little dab was all her outfit needed.

Then she looks up with those enormous blue kitten eyes.

That may be where she gets me.

They’re big, round, and wonderfully expressive against all those rich colors. Depending on which direction she turns her head, Hazel almost looks like a different kitten.

And then there are the ears.

Hazel has those wonderfully oversized Maine Coon ears with dark tips and little tufts reaching upward like exclamation points. They make her look as though she’s listening to absolutely everything.

Her coat deserves a second look too. Rich copper, warm red, deep brown, and nearly black areas flow together across her body, with tabby markings appearing through the darker coloring.

Nothing is perfectly matched from one side to the other.

That’s exactly why it works.

Even her long tail gets in on the drama, growing darker toward the end and giving her one last finishing touch as she walks away.

Hazel is the kind of kitten you look at once because she’s beautiful—and then look at again because you realize you missed something.

A different patch of color.

A stripe you didn’t notice.

That little white chin.

Those ear tips.

That face.

I know I’m supposed to remain objective.

I’m the breeder. I should know better.

But if someone told me everyone was going home tomorrow and I could keep just one, I wouldn’t need time to think about it.

I’d pick Hazel.

Her Color & Markings

Tortoiseshell Tabby (Torbie)

Hazel’s professional color and pattern classification is tortoiseshell tabby, commonly called torbie.

Her coat combines black-based and red-based coloring with visible tabby patterning. She has rich copper and red areas intermingled with deep brown-to-black coloring and darker tabby markings.

Hazel has a small white area on her chin, but she does not have white feet or the more extensive white spotting that would visually dominate her pattern.

Her eyes are currently blue. Because kitten eye color can continue developing as she matures, Hazel is listed as having possible blue eyes rather than guaranteed permanent blue eyes.
